Subject content

What’s Assessed?

The course aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills and practical NHS experience to embark on a career within the Healthcare Science sector.

Students will study the structure, function and illnesses that affect the three major body systems; respiratory, digestive and cardiovascular in one unit. Here students will learn how technology and advances in medicine allow us to treat these diseases.

The first aid unit compliments the body systems and disorders unit by giving students the practical experience and underlining knowledge behind the first aid procedures that can be used in healthcare settings such as working as a paramedic or doctor.

Another unit provides students with the underpinning knowledge and understanding of the essential skills required to communicate effectively to patients.

The examined unit focusses on knowledge of the legislation required when working in this sector and where the values of care are applied such as working as a GP. It emphasises the essential skills required for working in the sector that complement the underpinning scientific knowledge from earlier in the course and though students’ study of biology, chemistry and physics.
